Anchorage officials say they are considering an ordinance that would open temporary sites to dump snow as existing sites are already full.

Six of the seven dump sites for private snow removal companies are full and the seventh is getting close, the Anchorage Daily News reported Monday.

"You go to a condo, you pick up some snow and take it down [to a private snow disposal site] and realize the dump is closed," said Marcel Warmilee, who owns a snow-hauling business. "And maybe you have five or six dump trucks full of snow you don't know what to do with."

The ordinance would streamline the process of approving temporary dump sites, a process that normally takes months. The move would bring that time frame down to about a week, the newspaper said.

The temporary sites "are needed to keep driving on city and state roads, parking on private properties ... and other activities from becoming unduly problematic or even dangerous," the proposed ordinance says.

The sites would still be subject to inspections to meet environmental standards.

Anchorage has received more than 100 inches of snow so far this winter, the newspaper reported.
